Music Blend

The blend of notes creates

sound performed by various

instruments in an orchestra

The woodwinds produce

tone equated to smoothness

that merge with the vibrations

of the strings

A pound of a timpani drum

resonates with piano’s keys

as arpeggios are played

up and down scales

in a way to produce harmony

All are under the command

of animated leader with baton

who uses hands to create beat

as he points to which section

will perform next

His body dances to the music

as instrumentalists perform

against a backdrop of a colorful

stained glass window fused

with auburn, green, blue, red

and yellow diamond shape

glass merged together

to create a picture of a shepherd

holding a staff amongst his sheep

Yellow borders capture light

so the window is a portrait

enhanced with the art of song

Covid Shenanigans

Nervous hands hover over

keyboard as my seven–year-old

granddaughter becomes

curious at what different

keys on her computer

do when pressed

Unable to focus on her teacher

during remote learning, Bella

prefers to “chat” with her friends

While with me, I can curb

roving fingers but when

she is in a program at school

the distraction of her messages

in the “chat box” creates a problem

leading to being expelled

Her gracious instructor allows

her to return if she promises

to stop, even when a repeat

offense occurs

For a time, everything appears

calm until I receive notice

Bella is kicked out of her class

again

This time for using a share

button on the screen

and taking over as host

from the teacher

The principal advises

one more incident

will be grounds to release

her from the program

and send her back home

to learn

My husband moans

What will Bella try next?

What is next?

Why focus on what is next

when it is not here now

I can learn from the past

which lies along the side

of my life knowing

it can’t be relived

Slowly, I breathe in and out

to relax while I allow

my future to take care

of itself. I seek the light

in the beauty of today

and live in the present
