Clothes
My mother said what's next
after consenting to buy me a dress
from the street corner discount store
Would her indulgence
open up a never-ending quest
when I got older
for Versace, Coco Chanel
In college
all my sparkles turned into tears
my Armani shades & Benetton dress
got old in one season
my Ford Escort a piece of junk
compared to a Mercedes, BMW
Next came a lifetime
wrapped in the second-rate
silks and satins
of the material world
a never good enough
tilted self-image
